The depiction of the character of Sonic received a huge backlash from the fans during its delay in the last April and it did go through some major problems.

Over the recent few years, social media has turned out to be a problem creator for many movies, even before the release and Sonic is one of the recent examples of it, as suggested by a report of the Los Angeles Times.

According to a report, fans were disappointed with the character development of Sonic, and the fans even termed the teeth as ‘nightmare fuel’ and it was due to the fusion of realism and animation into the structure.

As claimed by the first time feature director Jeff Flower to the Los Angeles Times, he was pretty hurt at the social media backlash. He also stated that he was feeling low after the fans came out shouting against the character.

However, the director didn’t mope around in self-pity, and the entire team started working on making the character more realistic and similar to that of in the 1990s. The story of how Sonic The Hedgehog was saved after initial fan backlash is pretty interesting. Most of the people are aware of the fact that the recent industry relies heavily on previous brands or series for the development of projects.

And, due to this very fact, pleasing the fans becomes much more difficult. For example, ‘Cats’ by Universal Pictures got panned during its trailer release and never got the chance of coming back due to the social media backlash.

But, some production houses didn’t get bothered much due to the backlash. One such instance is when Walt Disney Studios refused to bring in any changes to the character of Genie portrayed by Will Smith, even after the initial backlash. The film Aladdin finally earned more than $1 billion at the box office.

As mentioned by Fowler, the initial design of Sonic received backlash due to the fact that they tried to make it too much real rather than doing it the other way and when the influence from the cartoon character was taken, it ultimately got closer to that of the original character.
