The Recording Academy released the list of Grammy nominations for the upcoming year. Since then, a lot of drama has been going on in the industry. So much so that the hashtag ‘Robbed’ was trending on Twitter that originated from distraught fans over the decision of the nominees. One of the most shocking comments came from The Weeknd himself whose latest album After Hours reached the pinnacle of critical acclamation alongside spending tops spots on music charts.

After he was snubbed by the Academy, he took to Twitter and responded in a rather straightforward way. He said that the Grammys remain corrupt to this day and the guild owners owe artists, the fans, and the music industry at large transparency. His manager also went on Twitter to let out the steam. He shared that corrupt leaders need to step down and the whole industry should now strive for change.

Following this heated debacle, TMZ published a report that the snubbing of The Weeknd from the Grammys might be directly associated with him performing at next year’s Super Bowl. The sources at TMZ also claimed that the Royal Academy and Super Bowl may have gone into negotiations which irked the Grammy heads and cost him his nomination for 2021.

The response to this claim came from Recording Academy Chair and Interim President/CEO, Harvey Mason Jr. who said that The Weeknd’s commitment to the Super Bowl has nothing to do with him being ousted from the nomination list. He also said that they are empathetic about the artist’s concerns about not getting a nomination. However, he readily acknowledged his creativity, art, and his endless contribution to the music community. He went onto say that his global influence is commendable and he is worthy of every bit of admiration. In a statement, he also said that the voting for the nominations for all categories was already closed before the singer’s performance at the Super Bowl was publicly announced. So this concludes that there is no correlation between the two.

He, however, did not say anything regarding why he was not nominated.
