The exponential growth of online streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, and other platforms is changing the watching habit of most of the users.
The demand and the growth of streaming are making the producers and executives of the industry take part in the ‘streamer’ sector in order to gain mass response. It is also one of the trendiest ways to reach people nowadays with the ongoing Global pandemic putting a halt to every occasion.
One of the renowned producers, Miranda Bailey has also agreed to the problem with the cancellation of her movie screening due to the covid restrictions. Her film ‘God’s Country’ was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this month.
Due to the restriction, the film was not screened at the Park City of Utah. It was virtually screened for the attendees of the festival so that they can enjoy the film from their homes.
Ms. Bailey said "Obviously it's a great disappointment, to me and the other filmmakers, to not have the experience of showing our movie to an audience of indie film lovers at Sundance."
Usually, the filmmakers prefer to screen their films through film festivals to get the best distribution deals offline. However, with the progress of OTT; the focus of the filmmakers has shifted to streaming platforms as well.
As the pandemic has taken over the world, the directors and filmmakers are struggling to gain enough theatrical run.
Ms. Bailey further said, "Fortunately there are a plethora of streaming platforms with brilliant original content who care about indies, and are spending money for award campaigns like traditional distribution used to do."
The number of users on streaming platforms is increasing rapidly. Netflix has more than 222 million subscribers. Similarly, Amazon Prime has more than 175 million viewers and Disney Plus around 118 million. The numbers are increasing every year with the changing habits of the users.
A recent survey says that 71% of American subscribers like to watch a new movie at home rather than going to the theatres. This behavior is seen in almost every country with a slightly shifted lifestyle. People are more likely to enjoy the comfort of their homes rather than traveling to movie theatres.
However, the number of streaming platforms is increasing as well and it is making the users quite overwhelmed with choices. A recent survey reflects that 46% of the users are more likely to subscribe to different streaming platforms simultaneously.
The platforms are being the future for the audience and the creators or filmmakers as well.
