The renowned pop star Ed Sheeran was accused of copyright claims of his song Shape Of You from the soundtrack Oh Why by Sami Chokri.

Recently he achieved victory over the ‘baseless’ allegation.

In response to this situation, Sheeran has said that the copyright culture is ‘really damaging to the songwriting industry’.

The judge passed the verdict on Wednesday that the song is not copied from any song.

Through social media, the artist has commented on the fact that ‘I hope that this ruling means in the future baseless claims like this can be avoided.

He has also said ‘While we are obviously happy with the result, I feel like claims like this are way too common now and have become a culture where a claim is made with the idea that a settlement will be cheaper than taking it to court, even if there is no base for the claim’.

‘This is really damaging to the songwriting industry. There’s only so many notes and very few chords used in pop music. Coincidence is bound to happen if 60,000 songs are being released every day on Spotify. That’s 22 milion songs a year and there are only 12 notes that are available’ her added more.

It is not the first time that Sheeran had to suffer this problem. The artist directly said to the media, ‘I don’t want to take anything away from the pain and hurt suffered from both sides in this case’.

‘But I just want to say I’m not an entity, I’m not a corporation, I’m a human being, I’m a father, I’m a husband, I’m a son...Lawsuits are not a pleasant experience and I hope with this ruling it means in the future baseless claims like this can be avoided’.

Ed Sheeran wrote this track in 2016 with Johnny McDaid and Steven McCutcheon. This is one of the most successful tracks of his musical career.

‘There was a lot of talk throughout this case about cost. But there is more than just a financial cost. There is a cost on creativity. When we are tangled up in lawsuits, we are not making music or playing shows’ said the makers of Shape Of You.

The deep impact of this situation has caused a lot of stress on the creators of the song. They expressed their emotion by saying ‘There is a cost on our mental health. The stress this causes on all sides is immense. It affects so many aspects of our everyday lives and the lives of our families and friends.

They have also said ‘There is a need for a safe space for all songwriters to be creative, and free to express their hearts. That is why we all got into this in the first place. Everyone should be able to freely express themselves in music, in art and do so fearlessly’.
