Alex Azar, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services will soon be visiting Taiwan in the highest-level visit by a U.S. official in four decades. The announcement of the visit was made on Tuesday by his office. Experts now think that the upcoming visit will definitely be displeasing China as it considers the island as its own.

Azar is going to meet Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, the Foreign Ministry in separate events in his visit. He is also going to meet Taiwan’s Health Minister Chen Shih-Chung, with whom he had a teleconference in April.

The relation between the two countries could further deteriorate by this visit as for China Taiwan is the most sensitive issue in Sino-U.S. relations.

In a public statement, Azar claimed that Taiwan has been extremely transparent and cooperative in terms of global health during the COVID-19 pandemic and long before it. He further said that he is eager to convey President Trump’s support for Taiwan’s global health leadership. He emphasizes their shared belief of free and democratic societies which are the best for protecting and promoting health.

Azar will be traveling with the chief medical officer of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mitchell Wolfe, and a few other members of the administration. His visit to Taiwan has been portrayed as ‘historic’.

Taiwan has acquired the backing of the U.S. for its plea to gain access to the World Health Organization during the pandemic. And this upcoming visit will strengthen the ties between the U.S and Taiwan, said the Foreign Ministry of Taiwan.

Taiwan could not become a permanent member of WHO because of China’s repeated objections as China still claims it as one of its provinces.

Though the U.S. does not have any diplomatic ties with Taiwan after they favored Beijing in 1979 instead of Taipei, it is still Taiwan’s main supplier of weapons and the greatest supporter on the international stage.

In 2014, then-head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy, island and was the last U.S. Cabinet-level official to do so.

While Taiwan has gained global praise for keeping its Coronavirus outbreak low with strict and effective precaution measures, the United States has become the epicenter of the disease reporting the maximum amount of cases and death.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a new law in March in support of Taiwan’s international role and China retorted back with threats of retaliation.
