An earthquake in Indonesia has devastated the island of Sulawesi and taken many lives.

The 6.2 magnitude quake has killed 7 people and several were injured. The officials are saying that number of injured people could be more than 100.

The final earthquake was bigger and more intense which came on Friday morning after a few hours of a smaller earthquake.

Indonesia has always been the epitome of some devastating earthquakes and Tsunamis. In 2018, an earthquake in Sulawesi had killed more than 2000 people.

The epicenter of the latest quake was at a depth of 10 kilometers and 3.73 miles ( six kilometers) northeast of Majene City.

The tremors of the quake could be felt around 01:00 local time on Friday which is 17:00 Thursday GMT. It lasted only for 7 seconds and no Tsunami alert was alarmed.

Thousands of people are reported to have left their homes and running to safety.

The authorities have said that the shockwaves that occurred by those two earthquakes can trigger a Tsunami.

According to local reports, many homes, two hotels, the governor's office, and a mall were greatly damaged.

More than a dozen of patients along with hospital staff got trapped under the rubble of a damaged hospital due to the intensity of the quake.

Arianto, from the rescue agency in Mamuju city, said, "The hospital is flattened -- it collapsed." He further added, "There are patients and hospital employees trapped under the rubble and we're now trying to reach them."

The authorities of Majene City said that four people were killed and more than 600 people were injured. Three other people were killed in the neighboring city Mamuju.

The reason why Indonesia is prone to earthquakes is that it lies in the region called ‘Ring of Fire’. The region is known for volcanic eruptions and frequent earthquakes on the Pacific Rim.

In 2004, a huge Tsunami was triggered by an earthquake from the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It killed over 226,000 people across the Indian Ocean. Among them, 120,000 were from Indonesia only.

The Indian Ocean Tsunami killed over 170,000 people in Indonesia a humongous magnitude of 9.1.
