The singer took to Instagram on Friday to issue an apology to his fellow industry mates, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson. In the post, he apologized for encouraging the steps that promote racism and misogyny.
He wrote that he is aware of the various comments, concerns, tags, and messages and he wants to respond to them. He said that he is deeply sorry that he was part of the entire problem of humanity and for all those times when he spoke out of turn and keeping mum for the right things.
Although he did not mention the examples of his actions for which he regrets, his public comments came at a time during a renewed conversation relation to two different tabloid-fuels periods in his career that involved various scandals with Jackson and Spears.
Spears is currently in a legal battle for her conservatorship. The public stir began following the airing of ‘Framing Britney Spears’ which is a documentary that examines the singer’s career and her shameful scrutiny by the media over the ages. As per the movie, Timberlake seems to have contributed to that, and what the media portrayed all these years have taken a significant toll on her mental health.
The couple famously dated for many years during the height of their careers in the teen-era.
On the other hand, the incident with Timberlake and Jackson has been at the height of public conversations in recent years. This followed the infamous wardrobe malfunction episode at the halftime Super Bowl show where the former ripped of Janet’s bodice revealing her right breast during a performance. Supporters of the singer who sided with her also started a hashtag campaign on Instagram.
He said that he apologizes to both women individually because he is aware of his failure as an empathetic human being. He addressed the ongoing stir and said he wants to take responsibility for his actions and grow from there in becoming a better and more reasonable person.
He also addressed the stereotype of the music industry that grooms white men specifically for success.
Timberlake shared in his statement about the flawed nature of the music industry and as a part of the privileged class, he wants to be vocal about this issue. He accepted his ignorance as he did not realize he was part of the elite oppressors. He said that he does not want to benefit at the expense of pulling others down.
