More than a dozen people died in Peru on this Saturday night. The unfortunate event took place in a Lima nightclub when police raided the place for the violation of Coronavirus restriction after they hosted a party with a huge crowd.

Thirteen people were trampled to death when people were trying to flee the place to get away from the police.

The officials from the public prosecutor’s office have informed the media that 11 people of the 13 dead were COVID-19 positive. President Martin Vizcarra said that 15 of the total 23 people who have been arrested by the police at the clandestine event on Saturday night have also been found to be positive for the virus.

The national police and government officials said that neighbors of the Thomas Restobar club in Lima’s Los Olivos district reported the event to the police and they raided the place on Saturday night. As soon as they arrived nearly 120 people were trying to flee the scene leading up to the heart-breaking event that followed. And also six people were injured in the chaos, including three police officers.

As the people inside the club panicked, most of them got stuck between the only entrance door which was pushed closed and a narrow staircase that leads to the street, policed claimed.

The initial reports claimed that 11 men and 2 women died in the chaos, but the government officials soon clarified on Sunday that 12 women and 1 man, aged between 20 and 30, were crushed to death on Saturday night.

Though Peru had closed all nightclubs since March and banned extended family gatherings and social gatherings on August 12 with mandatory curfews on Sunday, this incident has shown people's unwillingness to follow the new social norms and rules.

According to the Interior Ministry, police have arrested the club owners, who are a married couple. No comments were made by the representatives of the club.

After some relatives of the victims accused the police of using tear gas at local radio station RPP, the Interior Ministry of Peru denied all the charges.

The President expressed grief for the people who died in the incident. He also expressed his frustration on the irresponsible people who arranged similar kinds of events that have become a serious threat to public health in the country, as Peru faces Latin America’s second-highest COVID-19 infection rate.

As per the official reports, the 60 police officers who were a part of the raid will also be tested for the virus.

Peru has a death toll of 27,663 while the total number of recorded cases rises to 594,326 as of Sunday.
